Non-Veg Sustanability

Updated: May 7, 2020

Is the world on a killing spree?

Meat is a food group that a lot of non vegetarians eat and love however could it be that this meat is killing the planet because of it's high demand? More than 43% of the earth’s land surface is already in use for food production. There are many lifestocks used for meat production but I will go over the ones that is most used which are :

1.Beef

2.Pork

3.Chicken

4.Lamb

Beef Production

Beef production does impact plants, soil, air, and water, and depletes resources like fuel. Environmental management in grazing beef production is therefore even as important to the longer term of the industry and its individual producers as is product quality and consistency, profitability, and market access. One among the foremost repeated statistics wont to argue for reduced meat consumption: the claim that 100,000 litres of water are required to supply each kilo of beef – which could be a staggering 1000 times over what's needed to supply one kilo of wheat.

Pork Production

Pork is the most eaten meat in the world. Pig farmers know they have to produce food in an exceedingly way that satisfies demand and respects the communities within which they live, which to achieve success, they have to use resources in a cheap, efficient way. Each year more than 1 billion pigs are slaugtered worldwide. This underneath are the countries that produce the most pork and how many they slaughter annualy.

Chicken production

Chicken production and breeding other birds who lay eggs is called Poultry farming. Poultry farming includes birds like geese, turkey and chicken. All over the globe, 300 breeds of the domestic chicken species, exist. Chicken farming operations place size from 4,000 to 50,000 chickens sold per annum, with an average of approximately 14,500 chickens. Chickens contribute 89 percent of global poultry production, followed by turkeys at 5 percent, ducks at 4 percent and geese and domestic fowl at 2 percent. the remainder comes from other poultry species. Chickens also provide 92 percent of world egg production.

Lamb production

Lamb production is one of the most produced meat groups in the world that is not poultry and there a lot of countries that produce lamb, China being No.1 on that list with approximately 175 million lambs. Lamb is produced from younger animals, typically but a year old, and mutton is produced from older animals. Lamb and Beef produce most farm greenhouse gases. Animal agriculture is to blame for 14.5 percent of the world's greenhouse emissions, in keeping with the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, making it a big contributor to temperature change.

What can we do to stop it ?

  • Eat a balanced diet of vegetables & meat as much as possible

  • If you love meat too much then, buy the ones that emit the least greenhouse gases. For example don't buy Lamb, Pork, Chicken and Beef

  • Commit to reducing your meat and dairy consumption by some meals per week.
