Food waste

Updated: Apr 9, 2020

While world hunger is a high concern, we are wasting food by the minute. What If we don't waste food but give the food to the people who are hungry and go everyday without food? Can not wasting food could solve world hunger?

800 million people go hungry to their bed every single night. Meanwhile we are wasting food at our homes just because we aren't hungry. There are thousands of children who are hungry every day and are malnourished because they aren't getting food. Each and every one of these people can be fed with just a quarter of the food that is being wasted by all of us who are sitting in the developed part of the world.

Food waste is really, really bad for the environment. To grow the amount of food that we leave uneaten takes a land mass the size of china. 1.3 billion tonnes of food is being wasted every year. It is estimated that 30% of the food produced is wasted globally.

The food wastage also leads into other enviromental challenges such as waste disposal and deforestation. To grow this amount of food is increasing deforestation. Deforestation is happening constantly because of our demand of getting more and more food and this in turn is causing species to die because their homes are literally being cut down.

In the whole world 14% of the food in the world gets lost before harvest gets completes. In small countries like the Netherlands one person wastes 47 kg of food per year. This is equal to 800 million kg of food waste per year.

What can we do?

The simple things we can do are:

  • Do not waste food and leave food for later eat the whole thing.

  • Donate food to food banks that give them to refugees.
